Religion
Japan was discovered by the Portuguese in 1543 and was thought to be very very different to Europe. Japan Seemed to be much more civilised.
The Japanese ate with chopsticks and bathed almost every day. They kept their gardens tidy and would dress much nicer with colour. The Religion of the time and still to this day is Shintoism. The Portuguese tried to convert all of Japan into Christianity but didn't succeed. The word Shinto ("Way of the Gods") was adopted from the Chinese "shin" meaning "spirit" and "to" meaning a philosophical path or study. Japan has adopted many other religions like Buddhism and Confucianism.
Even today throughout all of Japan there is still Shintoism.
